Great Barrier Island, located in the outer Hauraki Gulf, is home to both Manuka and Kanuka oils, making it the only place in the world where these two plants coexist. This natural abundance became the driving force behind the design of Sven's Island. Working closely with New York artist Danielle Laurenti, Angela Spindler created whimsical illustrations that capture the essence of nature at its best.
The packaging of Sven's Island products is a nod to the historical packaging of personal care products. The products are packaged in tins, which not only reference the past but also provide durability for frequent usage. The labels, printed on pearlescent plastic with a spot gloss UV varnish, showcase the vibrant watercolor illustrations. The digital printing process ensures that even the most delicate colors are faithfully reproduced, resulting in a visually stunning final product.
One of the challenges faced during the design process was the limited budget. However, this constraint fueled creativity and led to inventive ways of delivering the desired result. Cost efficiencies were carefully considered, without compromising the overall vision of the brand. Additionally, a change in the brand name halfway through the project required the team to adapt and retain the approved look and feel, seamlessly incorporating it into the new name.
Sven's Island products not only excel in design but also in functionality. The rigid packaging ensures the products can withstand frequent use and being thrown into a bag. The creams themselves have a solid consistency, making the aluminum material ideal for their storage. The plastic labels were chosen to withstand the high oil content of the products, avoiding any staining or degeneration.
The Sven's Island project started in April 2014 and was finalized in January 2015. Extensive research was conducted to find the perfect illustrative style that would give the brand a fresh and quirky appeal while highlighting the clean and green associations of New Zealand. The result is a brand that exudes playfulness and charm, inviting consumers to experience the magic of Great Barrier Island.
Sven's Island has been recognized for its outstanding design with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. By incorporating the best practices in art, science, design, and technology, Sven's Island has truly made a mark in the world of personal care.
With its unique approach to personal care and its commitment to showcasing the beauty of Great Barrier Island, Sven's Island is a brand that stands out from the crowd. Angela Spindler and her team have created a line of products that not only nourish the body but also ignite the imagination.
